GETTING (T)HERE...
LANDMARKS
We are tucked away between two lanes, so no cars or traffic to disturb. However it can be tricky to find when coming for the first time.
Addresses are often useless in Kolkata for a variety of reasons so landmarks are generally the way people find their way around.
The taxi or hire car or even bus that brings you here will usually know main landmarks. People in the street will also help with landmarks.
We will advise which main landmark we think is best for you but they will be one of two:
HEDUA PARK (Also known as Azad Hind)
SCOTTISH CHURCH COLLEGIATE SCHOOL

HEDUA PARK
Hedua Park or Azad Hind Bag Park is a large gated and fenced park with a swimming pool in the centre. The corner we might set as a meeting point is located on Bidhan Sarani and Beadon St crossing. Beadon St is the most commonly used name but officially it is Danni Ghosh Sarani and Abhedananda Rd. On the corner is a police traffic booth covered with hoardings and a statue of Butto Christo Paul, an elderly gentleman sitting crossed legged on a chair. There are traffic lights, tram lines and public toilets close to the corner. Bidhan Sarani is a long tram lined road which, going south, becomes College St on which Calcutta University and Presidency University are located. Going north it passes Hati Bagan Market and then Shyambazar 5 Point Crossing. Coming from the airport you may come down to Hati Bagan market and then turn south into Bidhan Sarani to get to Hedua Park or you may come directly down Beadon St (Abhedananda Rd). SCOTTISH CHURCH COLLEGIATE SCHOOL
Also known as Scottish Church School or just 'Scottish'. The school is a major feeder school to Scottish Church College which is just around the corner and on the eastern side of Hedua Park. If you land in front of the College and there is no busy road or tramlines you are in the wrong spot but not far away. The School, established in 1836 is on Bidhan Sarani, very close to Hedua Park, and close to The Star Theatre and Hatti Bagan Market. The old entrance with large gates on Bidhan Sarani are often closed. Next to them is a statue of Satyendra Nath Bose, a theoretical physicist who worked with Einstein and after whom the boson was named. Buses and trams coming from the north and south will stop here. The stop is known as 'Scottish'. Coming from the airport you could arrive after turning south at Hatti Bagan Market and passing the Star Theatre or coming along Beadon Street and turning north at Hedua Park, passing the street art (bas relief) on the right. |
